Most of us dream of being able to make a liveable income from our passion for music, but the truth is making a regular income as a music producer has never been more competitive. The key to becoming successful in this industry is discovering that some aspects must be treated as business. We have put together some of our best tips and tricks to help you boost your online presence and gain yourself more bookings.
CONTENT & CONSISTENCY
The rule of thumb for any artist is to produce great material whenever they can. So to succeed you need to be producing and posting a high volume of quality music. It’s easy for your fans and listeners to lose interest if you don’t share new work regularly. The most favourable platform to share music on in 2017 is Soundcloud.
Here are some key points that can really improve your output.
- Collaborations: Collab’s are a great way of getting work done faster, plus you get the added bonus of another artist promoting the track.
- Make a schedule: How much music do you want to release this year? Write it down, including due dates.
- Appearance: In a world of graphics and advertisements, it’s difficult to stand out. Truly aesthetically pleasing album art instantly grabs the audience’s attention when going for a scroll. It’s here you can start promoting logos and distinct graphics for people to remember you by.
Coming Soon!!! Is a great example. Over the last six months, they have posted 10 tracks, 8 of which have been for free download – [We will discuss this more in the next section.]
THE MONEY IN MUSIC
If you talk to some established artists you might be surprised to find that very few of them are making a decent income stream from Beatport sales. Being in the top ten of an online music store is far more of a promotional success than a financial one. The real money is in playing sets. Your live performance is of far greater value than your actual music. Because of this, getting bookings is the most critical component of making it as an artist.
The list on the next page identifies the ultimate techniques for increasing your exposure, building your fan base and of course, playing more sets.
OFFER YOUR TRACKS FOR FREE DOWNLOAD
Free downloads in exchange for reposts and follows is possibly the most powerful way to grow your online following. Your fan base will increase and promoters will begin to notice you.
APPLY TO FESTIVALS
You might be surprised at the result! Worst case the promoter will now know about your project and you’ll have a better chance at playing next year.
Everything the public sees should be presented cleanly and professionally, but try to keep it authentic. This includes: ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING YOU DO OR SAY ON THE INTERNET.
INTERACTION & MUSIC MARKETING TOOLS
Whether it’s in person at a gig or online, you should try to leave a positive impression on the people you come in contact with.
WHERE TO POST
After you’ve played a show, make sure you write a post on the event page. This gives you a chance to thank the audience, the promoter and share your social media links. Try to write engaging posts – ’If anyone was wondering what the new track I played was, I’ll be releasing it for free download on Soundcloud in the days to come.’
Be yourself. If you’re commenting on a track try and say something unique and genuine.
If you find a track you like on Soundcloud, hit the favourite button, comment, engage! Same goes for Facebook.
